Progress and growth are dictated by order. Crawl, walk, run. Each stage of evolution is catalyzed through the success of the previous one. The wheel enabled the creation of the chariot and the mill, which evolved into advanced forms of transportation and food production. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew their powered airplane near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina for 120 feet over 12 seconds. Today we are planning crewed space flights to Mars that will take years and millions of miles to complete. The physical, social, and emotional aspects of our lives today were made possible through the evolutionary steps that led to them.
Individuals imagined many of the elements of our modern lives, but most are the products of group efforts. Our social structure provides a comfortable living in massive, constantly evolving multi-layered dynamic groups. Our collective individual progress enables the advancements of our society, from our family unit to our personal and professional circle, to our nation and the world.
Progressing effectively on any path requires an understanding of the journey itself and a healthy foresight of the possibilities ahead. An individual’s view of their goals and their ability to utilize them are limited to their vantage point. When the vision is shared with others and becomes a group effort, it can improve the results and reach untold frontiers. Orville and Wilbur Wright only saw the field ahead of them when they flew a few feet above it. They could not imagine how their short flight would inspire humanity to reach for the heavens less than a hundred and twenty years later.
We continually make efforts to advance ourselves, and those efforts become more effective with the help of others. The individual’s success then becomes the success of the group, and much like the Wright brothers, a group can be a small as two people.
