I love music. My collection, which I started as a teenager, contains a few hundred LP’s, cassettes, and CD’s. My musical taste developed as I matured, and with it, new genres were added to my collection. Occasionally, I would trade away titles I fell out of favor with for new ones. About half of my collection contains Israeli music, and the rest is mostly Progressive Rock, Rock, some Jazz, and classical.

I listen to my music whenever I find the time and the mood. My kids roll their eyes at the mechanical labor associated with handling LP’s and cassettes, even CD’s, which they too once used. My attempts at sharing the fun of handling the records or demonstrate the sound quality of these music formats fell on deaf ears. Don’t get me wrong – I do listen to music on my phone when driving, but the joy of spinning records or flipping cassette tapes has its own charm – something to do with youthful memories and old routines.

Many of our character traits and habits are formed during our youth. We may acquire new skills and customs later on, but our core makeup remains relatively the same. The mark which people and experiences leave on us when we are young and malleable is deep and often difficult to change. Behavioral traits, personal beliefs, eating habits and more are what we take with us into adulthood. When planting ourselves in a new environment, some of our habits or beliefs may clash with those of others. Some of us will chose to adapt, while others will dig in their heals and carry the flag, even when the state and values it represent have been long gone.

Initiating a change begins with with the recognition that something within one’s internal make is astray. Discomfort or disappointment of a place in life or a situation you find yourself in could push you to seek an adjustment. Some of us possess the tools required for that change, while others find themselves at a disadvantage and a loss. It is for those individuals that Life Coaching can offer great value.
